In what was the most surprising result of the day Saturday, the Florida Gators
upset the 11th-ranked Georgia Bulldogs, one of their arch rivals, 38-20
.
The Gators dominated the game, rushing for over 400 yards, despite completing just three-of-six passes for 27 yards.
However, if not for a key play in the first half, the game may have gone in a different direction. The Bulldogs had a 7-0 lead thanks to a Nick Chubb touchdown run and had just made a big stop on the Gators, holding them to a field goal attempt. The Gators faked the field goal and holder Mike McNeely scored from 21 yards out to tie the game.
In case you missed it, here is the play:
McNeely works at a local Publix (grocery store) in Gainesville, making this story even better. He was back at work Sunday.
Perhaps McNeely didn’t realize that stealing from Publix, not working there, is what gets you noticed – Heisman Trophy winning quarterback Jameis Winston, who plays for the rival Florida State Seminoles, famously took just over $30 worth of crab legs from a Publix in Tallahassee.
There have been rumors that Winston simply was given the crab legs for free by an employee and he didn’t actually try to sneak off with them. That leads to more speculation – was it McNeely giving the crab legs out? Could he have been trying to get the best player on his biggest rival into trouble? Sounds like it could be the best plan Will Muschamp has come up with since becoming Florida’s head coach back in 2011.
