Los Angeles Kings forward Jordan Nolan is not thrilled with his newly awarded suspension

The NHL awarded Kings center Jordan Nolan a two-game suspension this weekend, after he boarded Detroit Red Wings center Darren Helm with excessive force during the two teams’ matchup on Friday night.

In an explanation video released by the league (provided below the article), the league decided to award the suspension because of the excessive force used by Nolan to board Helm.

It’s likely that the suspension was as low as it was, only two games instead of what might have very easily been five, because Helm was able to stay in the game. The league has been trying to crack down on dangerous hits, though, and this one was very easily a hit that could have ended much more than it did.

Following the hit, the two teams ended up in a pile-up in the middle of the ice, as Red Wings defenseman Jonathan Ericsson almost immediately went after Nolan for the hit. Ericsson is still adamant that the hit was uneccesary and doesn’t regret his decision to chase down the 25-year-old forward.

The Kings are already suffering without defenseman Slava Voynov, and the defending Stanley Cup champs fell to the last-place Carolina Hurricanes on Sunday evening after the suspension was awarded.
