It isn’t every day that you hear the NBA’s reigning Rookie of the Year is being shopped.
However, that is exactly what we heard leading up to the 2014 NBA Draft. The 76ers were reportedly looking to get another pick (or more) for point guard Michael Carter-Williams. It surprised many but with the 76ers’ need for scorers, specifically shooters, it is a believable report.
Obviously, they weren’t able to deal Carter-Williams away but that doesn’t mean they can’t get a deal done during the season.
“Although Carter-Williams played well in his rookie season, the Sixers, at this stage in the rebuilding process, are always looking to gather more draft picks,” explains John Zitzler of Basketball Insiders. “It’s not that they feel Carter-Williams is a bad player, but speaks more to the value they place on high draft picks. A trade of Carter-Williams would certainly not sit well with the fan base that already went through one season of non-competitive basketball. While the fans may not like it, if the Sixers are presented with the opportunity to better themselves in the long-run by moving Carter-Williams, don’t expect them to say no.”
Although Carter-Williams put up big numbers, he shot very poorly and benefited from getting a lot of shots on a bad team that played at a face pace. Still, he was impressive for a rookie and clearly could be a very valuable asset should the 76ers decide to option him again.
Carter-Williams averaged 16.7 points, 6.3 assists, 6.2 rebounds and 1.9 steals per game while shooting 40.5% from the field, 26.4% from beyond the arc and 70.3% from the charity stripe.
