Nine players drafted in the 2011 NBA Draft received contract extensions before the deadline of Friday.
One of those players was Orlando Magic center Nikola Vucevic, who agreed to a a four-year deal worth about $53 million, including incentives. However, his teammate, forward Tobias Harris, did not get an extension. There have been a few theories as to why. One has to do with his shoe contract while some believe the Magic simply won’t want to pony up to keep him because they have Maurice Harkless, Kyle O’Quinn and the fourth-overall pick of the 2014 Draft, Aaron Gordon.
However, the most likely reason they didn’t get a deal is because they simply couldn’t come to terms. Tobias Harris is taking it in stride but admitted he’s disappointed.
“It’s business,” Harris said via Josh Robbins of the Orlando Sentinel. “It’s a little disappointing. But at the same time, I’ll just approach it the same way.”
Tobias Harris is going to continue to work but you can tell he is somewhat upset.
“I’ll just work on my game and just go out there and play basketball,” Harris said. “We weren’t able to get a deal done. The Magic never negotiated, so that’s that. And at the same time, I’m going to go out there and play for my team and just try to win basketball games.”
The Magic still have control over Tobias Harris as a restricted free agent so they will ultimately choose whether or not they want to keep him.
Through three games, he’s averaging 16.7 points and 7.0 rebounds per game.
He’s averaged 10.8 points, 5.1 rebounds and 1.1 assists per game while shooting 46.1% from the floor, 28.0% from three and 79.1% from the free throw line in his career.
