They aren’t trying to be funny. They are actually mad, usually, or in the case of Les Miles, we don’t know what they are. Nevertheless, college football coaches go on some epic rants in press conferences when they are upset, yet they usually have the opposite effect of what they desired. Instead of making an impassioned point, they just make us laugh.
Perhaps no coach’s rant in recent years is more famous than the one from Oklahoma State coach Mike Gundy. You know it as the one where he yells, “I’m a man! I’m 40!” That particular tirade was an effort to come to the defense of a player who had been criticized in the local newspaper. Gundy’s intent was admirable, but the rant itself was just funny.
ESPNU had a great idea when it comes to these rants from college football coaches. They put together a video where toddlers reenact those tirades, placing that footage side-by-side with the original rants. In addition to Gundy, ESPNU recreated rants from the aforementioned Miles of the LSU Tigers and from John L. Smith when he was the coach of the Arkansas Razorbacks.
Check out the video from ESPNU below, with some fine work from the toddlers who did the reenacting:
Honestly, I understood the girl doing the reenacting as much as I ever understand what the heck Les Miles is saying.
