The Toronto Blue Jays made their first move of the MLB offseason in acquiring Marco Estrada for Adam Lind, and Estrada’s acquisition could allow the Jays to trade starter J.A. Happ, who has been receiving interest from other teams.

The Toronto Blue Jays acquired Marco Estrada from the Milwaukee Brewers yesterday, trading first baseman Adam Lind in a move designed to increase the roster flexibility. Acquiring Estrada could also potentially allow the Jays to trade starting pitcher J.A. Happ, who has reportedly received interest this offseason after Toronto picked up his 2015 option yesterday.

Happ will make $6.7 million in 2015, which is pretty reasonable for a 32-year old innings-eater who has been worth at least 1.2 fWAR from 2012 through 2014, and a team looking for a stopgap at the back of their rotation could do a lot worse than trading for Happ. It’s unclear what the Blue Jays would seek in return for Happ or another pitcher, but Toronto will likely want to take back as little salary as possible, as the team is trying to free up dollars for the free agent market.

Toronto has a few choices to make this offseason, and re-signing outfielder Melky Cabrera remains a priority, as does bolstering the lineup to help replace Lind, although the team isn’t necessarily looking for another first baseman.
