The Maxwell Club not only presents the Mxxwell Award to the country’s best player but they also give the Chuck Bednarik Award to the country’s best defensive player.
It has been given out since 1995 – former Northwestern Wildcats’ linebacker and current head coach won the first two Bednarik Awards. Last year, it was won by Pittsburgh Panthers’ defensive tackle Aaron Donald, who was a first round pick of the St. Louis Rams. Former Penn State Nittany Lions‘ linebacker Paul Posluszny has also won the Bednarik Award twice, taking home the hardware in both 2005 and 2006. Penn State has taken home the award two other times (linebacker LaVar Arrington in 1999 and linebacker Dan Connor in 2007).
The list is highlighted by Clemson Tigers’ defensive end Vic Beasley, who is one of eight defensive ends on the list, the most among any position. Beasley has 8.0 sacks on the season.
