New York Knicks forward Carmelo Anthony scored his 20,000th NBA point in the third quarter of the team’s home victory over the Charlotte Hornets.

Carmelo Anthony joined elite company on Sunday night when he hit a 3-point shot to reach the 20,000 career point milestone in the third quarter of the Knicks’ 96-93 win over the Hornets. He is the 40th player in NBA history to hit that number and he’ll continue to climb that list as he leads the Knicks in scoring once again to start the season.

“It’s a humbling experience for me,” Anthony said after the game, per ESPN. “I never thought I would be sitting here talking about me scoring 20,000 points. I used to look at when I played with [Allen Iverson] back in Denver and I’d look at him and see his stats and say, ‘Man, you got 20-something thousand points.’ I never thought I’d be here talking about me reaching that milestone. I’m definitely humbled by this experience and I got more to go.”

Anthony scored 28 points in the team’s win and has averaged 22.3 points in New York’s 2-1 start. After missing the playoffs for the first time in his career, Melo is more driven than ever to not just score points, but to win games and get the Knicks past the first round of the playoffs for once.

Of course, scoring points and winning games go hand-in-hand so don’t expect the buckets to stop coming just because the team is shifting philosophies under head coach Derek Fisher.

“It doesn’t matter for Carmelo what offense you run,” Fisher said, “he’s going to score points. In terms of our team, running a system of offense is for everyone else — to be able to really do some things on the offensive end and balance our team out in a way that doesn’t allow teams to load up on one guy.”
