Philadelphia Eagles‘ head coach Chip Kelly was pleased with Mark Sanchez’s performance in NFL action yesterday.

The Philadelphia Eagles were able to pull off a 31-21 victory over the Houston Texans yesterday afternoon, but they lost starting quarterback Nick Foles to a broken collarbone. Backup quarterback Mark Sanchez came into the game and played very well to help power Philadelphia to the win, and he received praise from head coach Chip Kelly as well.

From Philly.com:

“I said since day one that you better have two quarterbacks in this league. I don’t think we missed a beat offensively.”

Needless to say, it was an encouraging sign for the Eagles that Sanchez was able to come in and play like he did. Kelly didn’t change up the playbook at all, and had Sanchez throw deep bomb on his first pass after entering the game. Sanchez doesn’t have the arm strength that Foles possesses, but he has enough to make things happen, and he is a much better quarterback than he was back with the New York Jets.

After replacing Foles, Sanchez completed 15 of his 22 passing attempts for 202 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions. One of his interceptions was not his fault, and he looked poised in the pocket late in the game on a big game sealing drive. Philadelphia’s offense is going to be just fine with Sanchez leading the way and he fits into Kelly’s system very well.

Obviously the Eagles will be happy when Foles is able to return, but they aren’t worried about it for the time being. They understand that he will miss a good amount of time but Sanchez is more than ready to step into the starting role and lead the Eagles forward. Aaron Rodgers missed seven weeks with the same injury last year, and Foles could end up missing right around that amount of time as well.

All of that being said, things aren’t all doom and gloom in Philadelphia despite a starting quarterback getting injured. Usually the season turns completely down and the fans are worried, but after Sanchez played a strong game, things don’t seem as bad. It will be interesting to see if Sanchez is capable of playing that type of football consistently until Foles returns.
