Derek Carr struggled against the Seattle Seahawks in what the Oakland Raiders hope will be a learning experience for the rookie.
In case you weren’t sure, it’s really hard to win an NFL game when you are the quarterback of the Oakland Raiders. The lone winless team in the NFL was thrown to wolves on Sunday when they visited defending Super Bowl champion Seattle Seahawks in one of the most hostile visiting environments in the league. Predictably, rookie Derek Carr was smothered early and often in a not-as-close-as-it-looks 30-24 loss. This prompted the second round draft pick to tell us what we already know: Winning is tough.

“This game is hard,” Carr said, per Marcus Thompson of the Mercury News. “That’s what I’m learning — it’s hard. It’s hard to win. It’s hard to go to work every day, and all those things. But just because of how I was raised, and the kind of person I am and what I believe, it’s not going to be a problem. I promise you it’s not ruining me.”
While it’s encouraging to see a rookie throw for a pair of touchdowns in the second half and make the game close, then follow it up with some candid talk after, the fact remains that Carr struggled mightily against the Seahawks, throwing one interception that was returned for a touchdown and another when Carr daringly threw at All-Pro cornerback Richard Sherman.
“That’s something that Derek will have to learn from,” defensive back Charles Woodson said, “try to pick and choose when he goes at a player like Richard. Maybe he should have gone somewhere else or thrown a different type of ball. But those are things he will learn as he grows as a quarterback.”
For now, Carr and the 0-8 Raiders will have to keep taking their lumps and learning as they go in the hopes of making things easier for themselves down the road.
