Eagles QB Nick Foles Will Not Require Surgery On Broken Clavicle
While still severe, the injury suffered by Eagles quarterback Nick Foles on Sunday will not require surgery.
Philadelphia Eagles Pro Bowl quarterback Nick Foles suffered a broken collarbone in the team’s 31-21 win over the Houston Texans on Sunday. The Arizona product will be out between 4-8 weeks, but it appears that right now the quarterback will not need surgery, according to Fox’s Mike Garafolo.
Eagles coach Chip Kelly said that the quarterback has a crack in his clavicle and will undergo an MRI to determine the extent of the injury. Several high-profile quarterbacks have suffered broken collarbones in recent seasons and have avoided surgery.
Last season, Green Bay quarterback Aaron Rodgers missed 7 games recovering from the injury, but returned for the team’s final regular season game against the Chicago Bears. In 2010, Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo missed the team’s final 10 games because of the injury.
The Eagles’ third-year quarterback has struggled to recreate the same success he had last season, when he was one of the NFL’s biggest surprises. Last year, Foles threw for 2,891 yards, 27 touchdowns with only two interceptions. This year he has struggled behind an offensive line that has been hurt by injuries. So far this season Foles has thrown nine interceptions to go along with four lost fumbles. Despite his struggles the Eagles are still in the top six in both points and yards per game so far this season.
Now the Eagles will turn to former Jets starter Mark Sanchez, who flourished in Chip Kelly’s system during the preseason. The former quarterback from USC finished yesterday’s game 15-of-22 for 202 yards to go along with two touchdowns and two interceptions. It was his first action in a regular season game since 2012.
The injury to Foles was not the only major injury the Eagles suffered in their win over the Texans. Starting middle linebacker DeMeco Ryans suffered a season-ending Achilles tear and starting offensive guard Todd Herremans left with an ankle injury. The Eagles are currently in 1st place in the NFC East with a 6-2 record with a one-game lead over Dallas as they get ready to host Cam Netwon and the Carolina Panthers next Monday night.
