Houston Texans head coach Bill O’Brien debunked rumors that the team was frustrated with rookie defensive end Jadeveon Clowney.

Rumors dominated headlines leading up to Week 9 that the Texans’ staff was irritated that the top overall pick in the 2014 NFL Draft, Jadeveon Clowney, would miss another game, this time with an illness, wishing the rookie would grow up a little. Head coach Bill O’Brien addressed those rumors in his press conference after the team’s 31-21 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles.

“I don’t know anything about those reports, I just know what I see,” O’Brien told reporters, per PFT. “I see a rookie player that is injured and is trying to come back from injury and he had a little setback this week with the flu and hopefully he’ll be back ready for Cleveland.”

O’Brien was calm and collected, per reports, in discussing his relationship with the talented rookie who finally returned to action last week against the Tennessee Titans, only to be deactivated a week later.

“I think the world of Jadeveon Clowney,” the coach said. “I don’t think there’s anyone here that’s frustrated with [him]. He and I speak every day, multiple times per day, text messages, phone calls, just like I do with all the rookies, and hopefully he’ll be ready to go.”

O’Brien added, in defense of Clowney, “It’s a big adjustment, it’s a whole lot different playing in this league than it is in college, and it’s an adjustment for all those guys.  He’s working hard to get over the hump and get back on the field.”
