Jadeveon Clowney’s Social Media Habits No Concern For Bill O’Brien

Houston Texans coach Bill O’Brien on Monday shot down any potential controversy over rookie Jadeveon Clowney’s use of social media.

The fans who believe that players live at the stadium and just do their sport thing 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year went indiscriminately nuts Sunday when a like was registered to a photo on Instagram from Jadeveon Clowney’s account … at the same time his team, the Houston Texans, was playing Sunday.

After Sunday’s game, Texans coach Bill O’Brien said he would look into the matter, but on Monday, the coach wasn’t having any of it.

"“Yeah, he and I, like, we tweeted back and forth (Sunday) night,” O’Brien said—quite sarcastically—to reporters on Monday, via the Houston Chronicle. “I went on Spacebook. He went on Twitter. … I mean, come—I don’t know, I don’t. You know? This guy wants to play football. He’s trying to get better to get back on the field.“I’m not going down this Twitter road. I don’t even know what that is really, to be honest with you. Instagram—my kid was trying to talk to me about it (Sunday) night. Like, ‘This is what Instagram is, Daddy.’ I don’t know. We’re moving on from that. We’re moving on.”"

Spacebook is apparently some sort of secret merger between My Space and Facebook (which is much better than the social media merger proposed a few years ago between Twitter and Facebook that could be called “Twitface.”)

Clowney hasn’t played since Week 1 with a knee injury, so it wasn’t a question of him not being focused on his job—since his job as an inactive player is to stand on the sidelines and stay the hell out of the way.

And that’s not even considering the fact that Clowney might have someone managing his social media accounts for him.

So good on O’Brien for not getting sucked into the vortex of the made-up controversy; besides, how much do you want to bet that a significant percentage—more than half—of the social media denizens who went temporarily insane about Clowney’s interactions Sunday are regularly checking their social media accounts while at work?

But, yeah, that’s different, right?

If nothing else, it is a reminder once again why “fan” is a shortened form of “fanatic”—sometimes folks get a little carried away with the whole thing.
