After the Chicago Cubs announced Joe Maddon as their next MLB manager and it has also been reported that his contract will be a five-year deal.

More from Chicago Cubs

The Chicago Cubs have now officially hired Joe Maddon and the deal will run through 2019. The five year contract will have Maddon taking over one of the most talented farm systems in baseball and he will be tasked with making that talent work at the major league level.

After firing Rick Renteria, the Chicago Cubs acted swiftly in hiring Joe Maddon after he walked away from the Tampa Bay Rays. In a move that effectively made Maddon a managerial free agent and one of the most coveted men in the game, the Cubs were his desired landing spot all along.

With the official news coming that Maddon had been named manager, it was only a matter of time before Maddon’s terms would be disclosed. Thanks to Robert Murray of MLB Daily Rumors, we now know that Maddon’s deal is a five year contract.

Considering the level of talent that Maddon is going to be given through the minor league season, and the time it will take for that all to gel at the major league level, the five year deal makes a lot of sense. Also, Maddon’s track record speaks for itself, and he is a manager that the Cubs shouldn’t have to worry about firing any time soon.

There have been rumors that the Cubs could be in on bringing both Jon Lester and Max Scherzer in during free agency this offseason. The moves would likely cost the team over $250 million, but would make them immediate contenders in the NL Central.

Adding the talent coming from Triple-A in names like Kris Bryant and Addison Russel, along with young players like Jorge Soler and Javier Baez, the Cubs will have one of the most exciting rosters in 2015.
