Los Angeles Kings forward Tanner Pearson named NHL‘s Rookie of the Month

I think the only thing about this that shocked me was the reminder that Tanner Pearson is actually a rookie.

The 22-year-old forward has made a name for himself on the LA Kings’ lethal ‘seventies line’, comprising of himself, Tyler Toffoli, and Jeff Carter. The trio broke out during the Stanley Cup playoffs last spring, but it looks like they’re still rolling ahead at full steam- and Pearson is leading the way.

Pearson was named Rookie of the Month by the NHL on Monday afternoon, recognizing that the forward is tied for fourth in the league in goals scored (7), finishing off October with nine points in eleven games.

He’s on a powerful line- Toffoli has 14 points (6 G, 8 A) so far this season, while Carter has 12 points- the whole line finished off October with monstrously high +/- ratings (Pearson’s alone was a +9) despite the slow start their franchise has gotten off to.

Pearson now sits second in all rookie scoring behind Nashville Predators rookie Filip Forsberg, who finished October with eight points but added another three on Sunday against the Vancouver Canucks. The thirtieth overall pick for Los Angeles has proven to be a part of their most valuable weapon this year- without the ‘seventies line’, the Kings would be even farther behind in the standings than they are at the present moment. The team, who walked away with the Stanley Cup this June, is coming off a four-game losing streak to end October and start off the new month.
