The Maxwell Club annually presents the Maxwell Award to the country’s best college football player.
Although the Maxwell Award is given to the top player, it usually is not a good indicator of who will win the Heisman Trophy. Last year, Alabama Crimson Tide quarterback A.J. McCarron took home the award and then Jameis Winston won the Heisman Trophy. In fact over the last six years, only one player has taken home both awards in the same year (Auburn Tigers’ quarterback Cam Newton in 2010).
This year the list is headlined by quarterbacks – 12 of them to be exact. The favorite appears to be Oregon Ducks’ signal-called Marcus Mariota but Mississippi State Bulldogs’ quarterback Dak Prescott is breathing down his neck. Florida State Seminoles’ quarterback Jameis Winston, the reigning Heisman Trophy winner, is also a semi-finalist. He has still not lost a game in his college career.
