After a promising performance in a loss to the Kansas City Chiefs, Michael Vick will retain the starting quarterback job for the New York Jets.

The New York Jets are a hapless mess that’s already been all but mathematically ruled out of the NFL playoff race. That doesn’t mean they can’t play for pride though. In turning to veteran Michael Vick as the starting QB over second-year disaster Geno Smith, the team found a semblance of respectability, even if they ended up losing to the Kansas City Chiefs. For that, coach Rex Ryan is content to stick with Vick for another week, provided he’s healthy.

“I thought he played well, so we’ll give him another shot against Pittsburgh,” Ryan said, per ESPN, “As long as he’s healthy.”

The ‘if healthy’ part has always been a caveat with Vick, whose running style has often sidelined him and cost him consistency throughout his career. Now with the Jets, Vick can once more set out to prove himself as a capable starting NFL quarterback. At least then the Jets would know they have one such player on their roster.

The Jets were forced to turn to Vick after Geno Smith gave them no choice with three interceptions in the first half of a blowout home loss to the Buffalo Bills. Smith had thrown ten picks to the point where he was pulled in favor of Vick, who orchestrated a touchdown drive his first time out against Buffalo.
