The Big Ten has suspended Maryland wide receiver Stefon Diggs and fined the university $10,000 for failing to shake hands prior to the start of the Terrapins game against Penn State on Saturday

Prior to the kickoff in the first ever Big Ten meeting between Maryland and Penn State, the Terrapins captains refused to shake hands with the captains from the Nittany Lions as the two sides met for the pregame coin toss. This proved to be a costly error as the university was fined $10,000 and wide receiver Stefon Diggs was suspended for one game.

The Big Ten issued a statement saying it violated the conference’s policy on sportsmanship and Maryland head coach accepted the penalties and took full responsibility for what the conference called “exceptionally regrettable” after Maryland pulled a bush league stunt by not shaking hands with their opponents.

According to a statement released by the Big Ten, via CFB Talk, Edsall failed to control his team prior to the game. Maryland players initiated a confrontation with Penn State players as the teams took the field. During the incident, Diggs made contact with a Big Ten official as the bumping and shoving was being broken up.

Diggs leads Maryland with 52 receptions for 654 yards and five touchdowns and will be suspended for their next game against Michigan State.

Maryland lost the public perception battle but they won the game by one point, pulling off a 20-19 win on the road to get to 6-3 and eligible for a bowl game.
