Washington State quarterback Connor Halliday didn’t hold back when replying to a tweet from former teammate Taylor Fertitta after a broken leg Saturday.

You can pack a lot into 140 characters.

Washington State quarterback Connor Halliday proved that early Sunday morning when replying to a tweet of encouragement from a former teammate.

Halliday sustained a season-ending broken leg in Saturday’s 44-17 loss to USC when he leg got caught underneath Trojans defensive lineman Leonard Williams while throwing a pass.

It’s the second major injury Halliday has sustained while at Washington State. In 2011, he lacerated his liver in an overtime loss to

Utah

.

Halliday entered Saturday’s game leading the nation in passing touchdowns, passing yards and completions per game. The senior completed 67.3 percent of his passes for 3,873 yards and 32 touchdowns with 11 interceptions in less than nine games this season.

Last season, he tied the NCAA Division I record for completions (449) and broke Drew Brees’ record for attempts (713).

Considering Washington State (2-7) is averaging only 44.6 yards per game on the ground, Halliday’s flying circus was basically the Cougars’ offense.

Halliday faced an uncertain future even before the injury. Mike Leach-coached quarterbacks have not translated well to the NFL level. Halliday’s predecessor, Jeff Tuel, is on the Buffalo Bills’ practice squad.

It’s also unclear whether Halliday will recover sufficiently to receive an invitation to the NFL combine or be able to participate in a pro day next spring.
