Washington Capitals captain Alex Ovechkin takes over the franchise total points record

The most patriotic team in the NHL is currently led in all-time points by the quintessential Russian skater.

The team captain hit his 826 NHL career points, which has him taking over the franchise record from Peter Bondra, who finished his fourteen seasons with the team with 823 points. He earned the point off an assist on Nicklas Backstrom’s goal in the first period of the game Tuesday night.

Ovechkin isn’t even thirty.

Let’s just think about how ridiculous that is.

Ovechkin is also now only 44 goals shy of the franchise career goal record, reminding fans that they can criticize the captain all they want- he’s still pretty good.

The Washington Capitals hope to bring home a win Tuesday night against the Calgary Flames, which would effectively end their four-game losing streak. They most recently fell 6-5 to the Arizona Coyotes, although Ovechkin himself played better than many had seen him play all season in that game- he picked up four points, three of them in the first period alone.

Ovechkin has long been a hot topic in the NHL, as the Russian skater oftentimes offsets his superhuman goal-scoring abilities with questionable defensive choices and violent hits on the ice.

Still… 826 points, and he’s still not 30.

Just.

Let that sink in, Capitals fans. He’s all yours.
