  • While it’s cliche to use the term “statement” game two weeks into the season, the Rockets may have made one as they downed a pretty good Heat team. James Harden and Dwight Howard were up to their usual tricks, posting a combined 51 points, 19 rebounds, 10 assists, and 2 blocked shots (both Harden’s), and to everyone’s surprise, Trevor Ariza has been playing lights out on offense, this time scoring 19 points on 5-of-8 shooting, all threes.

Coming into the season, the Rockets were candidate to many as a team who could potentially slip out of the Western Conference playoffs race. They had lost Jeremy Lin and Omer Asik, allowed Chandler Parsons to land with division rivals in the Dallas Mavericks, and did little to replace two of those three players (obviously Ariza steps into Parsons spot).

But through the first five games of the season, no one in the NBA has been better. They haven’t had the toughest schedule (four of their five wins have come across teams who missed the playoffs last season), but as the old saying goes, you play who the schedule tells you to.

The real test for the Rockets is next up on the schedule when they take on the reigning NBA champions in the San Antonio Spurs. If they can pull this one off, the Rockets bandwagon will gain a lot of passengers.
