The second-ranked Florida State Seminoles fell behind the then 25th-ranked Louisville Cardinals 21-0 on Thursday night largely in thanks to three interceptions by star quarterback Jameis Winston. In the second half, Winston completely turned things around, leading the Seminoles to a 42-31 victory, completing 25-of-48 passes for 401 yards and three touchdowns.
However, in the third quarter, Winston was hit and suffered a sprained ankle. He finished the game but it was clearly bothering him. On Monday, head coach Jimbo Fisher told reporters Winston should be fine to play when the Seminoles host the Virginia Cavaliers Saturday.
“Should be good,” Fisher said when asked about the reigning Heisman Trophy winner’s status for Saturday’s game against Virginia via Jared Shanker of ESPN.com. “… It’s an injury but no different than anybody else’s. A lot of guys got sore ankles right now.”
After the game, Winston was interviewed and said “pain is temporary.”
“Pain is temporary,” Fisher said, echoing Winston’s postgame comments. “You got to put it away. The guys that can deal with and play with it are the guys [that succeed] in this game for a long time. I thought he dealt with it very well.”
Winston is obviously the most important player on the team but the Seminoles could get several other key players back this week, including linebackers Terrance Smith (who entered last week as the ACC’s leading tackler) and Matthew Thomas (who injured his shoulder against the Cardinals).
The Seminoles and Cardinals will kick-ff from Doak Campbell Stadium in Tallahassee, Florida at 6:30 pm EST Saturday night.
