The Chicago Cubs introduced their new manager to the world yesterday afternoon, and by the end of his introductory press conference, Joe Maddon had given Chicago a taste of what he will bring to the Cubs — and
a round for reporters at the conference, which was at a bar near Wrigley Field.
After a press conference filled with hope and Maddon’s typical sense of humor, Maddon had the bartender — or “barkeep,” as he called them — put a round on him for all who attended, because hey, a five-year $25-million contract will allow you to do that. But Maddon rolls harder than just one more drink. When Maddon buys you a round, apparently he means a beer and a shot:
Maddon means Hazleton, PA, his hometown, and this isn’t the first time Maddon has bought drinks for fans and friends, so it’s not like his new $25-million is burning a hole in his wallet or anything, but it will be curious to see how frequently his “Win or Weep” parties happen in Chicago.
Maddon’s been around the game a long time, and knows what he’s doing, so I can drop the feigned concern over drinking with reporters, and just kick back and enjoy Maddon being himself and not giving a crap about what others think.
