The Orlando Magic have two key fourth-year players they wanted to get extensions done with before last week’s deadline. They agree to terms with center Nikola Vucevic on a four-year deal worth about $53 million.

They didn’t, however, come to terms with forward Tobias Harris but it wasn’t because of a lack of trying.

“Just around Labor Day, the Magic reached out to Harris’ camp to start the conversation and offer up the idea of a deal in the $9 million per year range,” reports Steve Kyler of Basketball Insiders. “Harris’ camp was seeking something more substantial. Those talks were cordial and ended without any sense of progress. The two sides never talked numbers or negotiated again.”

With the way players are getting paid and the salary cap set to increase with the new television deal, it would have been a terrible idea for Harris to take that deal. Now, Harris can become a restricted free agent and find the best deal he can. Then, the Magic can decide whether or not they will match. All indications are that they will.

Tobias Harris put up 14.6 points, 7.0 rebounds and 1.3 assists per game while shooting 46.4% from the field, 25.4% from beyond the arc and 80.7% from the charity stripe last night. In his career, he’s averaged 10.8 points, 5.1 rebounds and 1.1 assists per game while shooting 46.1% from the floor, 28.0% from three and 79.1% from the free throw line.
