San Francisco 49ers Aldon Smith to Return Soon?
San Francisco 49ers player Aldon Smith could possibly be preparing for a return to the playing field.
The saga continues for San Francisco 49ers player Aldon Smith. Smith was initially sentenced by NFL commissioner Roger Goodell to a nine-game suspension for violation of both the substance abuse and the personal conduct policy. That would have Smith returning for the contest versus the New York Giants on November 16th.

Recently, however, there has been news that the NFL may reduce the suspension by one or two games. This could be possible “fallout” from the new substance abuse policy that saw players like Dallas Cowboys’ cornerback Orlando Scandrick’s suspension reduced earlier in the season. If his penance is shortened, Smith could be playing as soon as this coming Sunday against the New Orleans Saints.
No way this please the Saints and head coach Sean Payton. Smith has registered a league-leading 42 sacks in 43 games and would have to be game-planned for. News will most likely break later today on if the NFL will bend on Smith’s suspension and if so, New Orleans will most certainly have their work cut out for them. Especially considering they’ve most likely already begun planning for Smith’s absence.
No news on this by Wednesday could possibly mean Smith serves this additional game on the sidelines and returns as originally scheduled. Typically, a player would be allowed to begin practicing on the Wednesday preceding a return if that was/is the call the NFL is planning to make. Today will most likely tell the story of if Payton’s head explodes from anger or if his dinner tastes great later.
