Steve Spurrier’s Plan Is To Return To South Carolina
Steve Spurrier unveils his plan to possibly return to coach the South Carolina Gamecocks in 2015.
Talk about rough. The South Carolina Gamecocks entered 2014 ranked #9 in the country and showed no signs of slowing down sans the loss of defensive beast Jadaveon Clowney to the NFL Draft. What a difference a few weeks can make. Nowadays the Gamecocks are doing all they can to simply not lose games (and it’s not working).

Amidst this struggle, the question of the hour now becomes “is Steve Spurrier going to return next year?”. It’s a very valid one and South Carolina fans and students are made even more anxious by the team’s current record of 4-5 overall (2-5 conference). Well The Old Ball Coach took to the microphone and seemingly threw the nervous many some hope.
“The plan is to definitely be back here and so forth,” Spurrier told The State this week. “Just say that’s the plan.”
That does sound equally as committal as it does noncommittal. He went on to remind everyone that it’s about this year for him; not the next.
“You probably have some questions that I’m going to have a tough time answering,” he said. “If it’s got anything to do with coaches coming back next year, me coming back next year, I am just going to refrain from all of that. Let’s get through this season here and see where we are all at is probably the smartest thing for all of us to do right now.”
And there it is. If you were looking for an all-out and unbridled “yes” from Steve Spurrier on returning in 2015, you won’t be receiving it from him anytime soon. His focus is on cleaning up this year and trying to make it respectable.
“Gosh amighty, I didn’t see all this coming,” said Spurrier. “I don’t think anybody did. The sad part is the games have been winnable but something has happened to us at the end. It is what it is. We have to regroup and keep fighting, try to get these guys positive and see if we can get a ball to bounce our way maybe late in a game or so forth.”
He then offered a quirky point to the press.
“I was telling our coaching staff, I think Taylor Swift’s got a song called ‘Shake it Off.’ Ugh. That’s what we’re trying to do, shake it off and get ready for the Florida Gators next week. ”
Sorry to break it to you, coach. But the Gators are flying high off of a huge upset over the Georgia Bulldogs and Taylor Swift isn’t going to save you here. It’s best you get the boys ready to play.
