In horribly sad news, Halsey died in a climbing accident in Texas. USA Today reports the following about the incident:
"Former major league pitcher Brad Halsey died after he fell or jumped from a 100-foot cliff near his Texas home, a judge who ordered the autopsy told USA TODAY Sports on Wednesday.Halsey died from multiple blunt force injuries but the manner of his death is unknown at this time, said Judge Jennifer Saunders of Comal (Texas) County."
The investigation into Halsey’s death is ongoing, with the unfortunate possibility that he was intentionally trying to hurt himself among the possibilities being considered. According to the same USA Today report, Halsey’s family asked for privacy in the matter. A memorial service will be held on Friday.
Halsey had continued to chase opportunities for a big league gig as recently as 2011, but his last big league action was during the 2006 season. He made 88 career appearances, going 14-19 with a 4.84 ERA.
He was only 33 years old. We wish Halsey’s family and friends the best as they deal with this tragic news.
