The Golden State Warriors have built an excellent team over the last few seasons but seem well aware that they need to make a few more upgrade before they are going to win a title.
However, they do seem worried about the tax, which is why they may deal one of their higher-paid players.
According to Zach Lowe of Grantland, the Warriors may shop David Lee and could even include Harrison Barnes as a “sweetner.”
"The Warriors might be willing to bite the tax bullet for one season, depending, again, on where the league and union end up on smoothing. If things break right for Golden State, the tax line in the following 2016-17 season will shoot far beyond the point at which they’d really have to worry about ever paying it again.Regardless: Don’t be shocked if Lee ends up in trade rumors over the next few months. Barnes in theory could work as that trade sweetener, since the Warriors could probably get by on the wing with Iguodala, Thompson, Shaun Livingston, Leandro Barbosa, and Green logging spot minutes at small forward."
Lee is scheduled to make $15,012,000 in the 2014-2015 season and $15,493,680 in the 2015-2016 season.
Lee hasn’t played in the Warriors’ last three games because of a hamstring injury.
The Warriors will play host to the Los Angeles Clippers Wednesday night (10:30 pm ET, ESPN)
Lee has averaged 15.2 points, 9.8 rebounds and 2.4 assists per game while shooting 53.4% from the floor and 78.0% from the charity stripe in his career. He is now in his 10th season. Lee was selected by the New York Knicks with the 30th-overall pick in the first round of the 2005 NBA Draft. After his fifth season, he was traded to the Warriors in a sign-and-trade so the Knicks could sign Amar’e Stoudemire.
