Smith has been suspended one game for striking Washington Wizards guard Glen Rice Jr. in the groin, the league announced Wednesday.
Watch below the move that cost J.R. a chance to play in the Knicks’ Wednesday game against the Detroit Pistons:
The New York Post has additional details about Smith’s suspension:
"Rod Thorn, the league’s disciplinarian, made the announcement and is likely tired of Smith’s act by now. Smith will lose $54,385 in wages from the ban.According to a source, several members of the Wizards felt Smith did it with intent as the Knicks trailed by double digits in the fourth quarter. For Thorn to take action, the NBA had to believe Smith did it intentionally. Smith didn’t appear apologetic after the play."
This marks Smith’s third suspension in two years. Smith was banned from a 2013 playoff game against the Boston Celtics for elbowing Jason Terry in the head and for the first five games of this past season for failing a marijuana test.
Smith is averaging 7.5 points, 1.8 rebounds and four assists per game this season. Smith, a 10-year veteran, has career averages of 13.3 points, 3.3 rebounds and 2.2 assists per game.
