Coming into this week of Champions League action, we expected Cristiano Ronaldo to tie or beat Raul’s all-time scoring record when he played Liverpool on Tuesday. Ronaldo’s 70 goals in the tournament were just one goal behind Raul’s mark and when Liverpool announced they were fielding a squad with a lot of bench players it seemed destined to happen.
Right behind Ronaldo was his La Liga rival, Barcelona’s Lionel Messi, with 69 goals. Ronaldo was held scoreless by Liverpool, but Lionel Messi scored twice against Ajax on Wednesday to tie Cristiano Ronaldo and then pass him to tie Raul as the all-time scorer in UEFA Champions League.
That record tying goal came against a short-handed Ajax squad playing with 10 men after defender Joël Veltman was sent off with a red for his second yellow card in the 71st minute. His first goal was a contested header into an open net after a huge error from the Ajax goalkeeper.
