Boston Red Sox slugger Mike Napoli underwent successful sleep apnea surgery to start off his 2015 MLB off-season.

You never know what might be happening behind the scenes with big league players. You never know the things that aren’t on the field and aren’t being reported that might have an impact on the results on the field.

Take, for example, if a player is not able to get a normal night’s sleep. That was the situation that Red Sox first baseman Mike Napoli was dealing with this past season. How much that affected his play on the field isn’t necessarily known, but the fact that Napoli was dealing with sleep apnea certainly must have had some sort of impact.

CSNNE.com reports that Napoli underwent successful sleep apnea surgery this week to start his off-season:

"Red Sox first baseman Mike Napoli has undergone successful surgery in relation to his sleep apnea.Last month Napoli told WEEI.com that he’s been dealing with the condition for some time and has tried other solutions prior to undergoing the procedure.Napoli is expected to return home later this week after a short stay in the hospital."

Napoli is under contract through the 2015 season. He is coming off a 2014 campaign in which he batted .248/.370/.419 with 17 home runs and 55 RBI in 119 games played. Like so many members of the Red Sox, Napoli will look to rebound with better overall results next season.
