Brett Gardner, arguably the New York Yankees’ best player in 2014, had surgery last month to repair a core muscle near his ribs.

Brett Gardner made it through 148 games last season for the New York Yankees, but had surgery in mid-October to repair a core muscle in his ribs.

According to ESPN New York, Gardner had a procedure on his right rectus abdominis muscle (apparently he had wreckedus the rectus) after putting together a solid season.

Gardner, 31, hit .256/.327/.422 with 25 doubles, eight triples and a career-high 17 home runs, driving in 58 runs and stealing 21 bases.

His production tailed off dramatically in the second half of the season, likely because of the rib muscle issue.

Before the All-Star break, Gardner hit .279/.353/.424, but dipped to .218/.286/.417 afterward.

He hit just .193 in August and September.

"“I think that here in the next week or two, I’ll be pretty darn close to 100 percent and just be able to go through my normal offseason routine,” Gardner said on Sirius XM/MLB Network Radio. “That’s one of the reasons we just went ahead and got it done after the season.“Obviously without making the playoffs, we got a much longer offseason than we would have liked, but it also gives me a little extra time on the front end to kind of get this thing taken care of and not have it be an issue next year.”"

Gardner, who signed a four-year, $52 million extension before the season, was a third-round pick by the Yankees out of the College of Charleston in 2005 and debuted in the majors in 2008.
