Boston Celtics’ point guard Rajon Rondo reportedly asked the Celtics for a trade. Since then, both teams have continued to deny those reports and each side continues to say they want to remain together long-term.
Most still expect the Celtics to trade Rondo and make room and turn over the reigns to rookie Marcus Smart, which makes sense. The Celtics have a lot of young talent and would probably be best served continuing to build around it.
Either way, Rondo will be a free agent following the season (which may make it difficult to trade him) and he will be looking for a max contract.
Although Steve Kyler of Basketball Insiders doesn’t believe he is worth a maximum contract, he believes he will get one.
Rondo has played in all three games for the 1-2 Celtics and is averaging 8.0 points, 11.7 assists, 8.7 rebounds and 2.0 steals per game while shooting 37.9% from the field, 20.0% from beyond the arc and 16.7% from the charity stripe (six attempts). Rondo has averaged 11.1 points, 8.4 assists, 4.6 rebounds and 1.9 steals per game while shooting 47.5% from the floor, 25.2% from three and 62.1% from the free throw line in his career.
