Ryan Mallett was named the Houston Texans starting quarterback by head coach Bill O’Brien on Wednesday afternoon. Houston faces the Cleveland Browns, following their bye week.

If you are going to make a quarterback change in the NFL, there is no better time to do so than during your team’s bye week. That is exactly what Bill O’Brien and the Houston Texans have decided to do.

When the Texans return to action against the Cleveland Browns in Week 11 on Nov. 16, it will be Ryan Mallett who takes the field with the first-team offense.

Mallett was officially named the Texans’ new starting quarterback on Wednesday.

“I might be wrong, but I think this might be the thing that helps our team,” O’Brien told the media, via the Texans’ official Twitter account.

The Texans traded for Ryan Mallett on Aug. 31, when they sent a conditional sixth- and seventh-round draft pick to the New England Patriots. O’Brien was familiar with Mallett, thanks to his time as New England’s offensive coordinator when the team selected Mallett in the third-round of the 2011 NFL Draft.

At 4-5, the Texans are looking to turn things around and put together a solid run to finish the season, and O’Brien seems to believe Mallett will be the right guy for the job.

We will have to see whether his confidence in Mallett is rewarded when the quarterback steps onto the field for the first time as the Texans’ starter.
