The San Antonio Spurs are attempting to win their third straight Western Conference title and their second straight NBA Championship. However, they are always looking toward the future and have to prepare for the possible retirement of big man Tim Duncan and guard Manu Ginobili.

According to Zach Lowe of Grantland, if both Duncan and Ginobili opt for retirement, the Spurs could be in the market for a max free agent and may target Memphis Grizzlies‘ center Marc Gasol.

"Speaking of cap holds! The Spurs and Kawhi Leonard did not agree on an extension, which seems insane, since Leonard is a two-way beast who just won the freaking Finals MVP award. The reason is simple, as Matthew Tynan pointed out at the wonderful blog 48 Minutes of Hell: If Tim Duncan and Manu Ginobili retire, the Spurs could have enough cap space to lure a max-level free agent who might fit their system. If we do say farewell to those two legends, R.C. Buford should be sharing some tapas with Marc Gasol at the stroke of midnight on July 1, though there will be lots of other big men available if Gasol decides to stick around in Memphis."

Gasol has stated that his preference is to remain in Memphis but plenty of teams are going to make at run at him. He’s been most closely associated with the New York Knicks because of his brother, Pau Gasol’s relationship, with Knicks’ president Phil Jackson.

Despite missing, 23 games because of injuries, Marc Gasol still averaged 14.6 points, 7.2 rebounds, 3.6 assists, 1.3 blocks and 1.0 steals per game while shooting 47.3% from the field, 18.2% from beyond the arc and 76.8% from the free throw line last season. So far this season, he’s averaging 22.5 points, 8.5 rebounds, 2.3 assists and 1.8 blocks per game while shooting 55.7% from the floor and 73.3% from the foul line.
