Winnik collided with Avalanche defenseman Jan Hejda near the Colorado blue line less than one minute into the game.
After being upended, Daniel Winnik tumbled head first into the ice and was knocked unconscious from the blow sustained to his head. He remained on the ice until receiving medical attention.
Winnik was attended to by the team’s medical staff before being placed on a backboard and then being stretchered off of the ice.

While it was scary to see Winnik on the ice motionless, the good news is that he appears to be recovering well.
Shortly after being taken away on a stretcher, the Maple Leafs announced that Winnik was alert and moving. That is obviously a very positive sign, but there is no official word on his diagnosis.
In 13 games this season, Winnik has one goal and six assists.
