World Series hero Pablo Sandoval is now a free agent, and as the MLB hot stove gets rolling, the man known as “Kung Fu Panda” is reportedly seeking a six-year contract.

The San Francisco Giants and Pablo Sandoval could never quite agree on the third baseman’s long-term value. That created a rare situation where the Giants, a team notorious for locking up key players early, actually let Sandoval hit free agency this winter.

At issue, of course, is how well Sandoval will age as a player. There have always been issues with his weight and how well he holds up over the course of a long season. Yes, Sandoval has been clutch in the postseason and has been integral on this Giants’ miniature dynasty, but his regular season production doesn’t always match those heroics.

If that is the cause for the disconnect between the Giants and Sandoval, then a report this week from the San Francisco Chronicle certainly will raise some eyebrows.

According to Henry Schulman, Sandoval is seeking a six-year contract. To say that is ambitious would be an understatement:

"Pablo Sandoval is seeking at least a six-year free-agent contract, with the length of the deal more important to the third baseman than the dollars, his agent just told me.Gustavo Vasquez, speaking after he met with Sandoval in Florida, said he has spoken to a “few teams” about the third baseman since free agency began in earnest Tuesday. That includes the Giants."

I feel comfortable in predicting that none of those teams are talking about a six-year deal, however.

That type of long-term commitment is risky with any player. It would be true if Sandoval’s body was his temple, or whatever, and is only more so because of questions about his physical conditioning.

The Giants offered Sandoval a one-year, $15.3 million qualifying offer. He quickly rejected it, and while there is a chance that he signs a multi-year deal somewhere else, it won’t be this kind of mega-deal unless some team is truly desperate to have him.
