Tracy McGrady decided to make a comeback last year – to baseball. He wound up pitching in a minor league game. That sparked his interest in a potential return.

In fact, two months ago, there was a report that McGrady was working out with Los Angeles Lakers‘ guard Kobe Bryant in hopes of making an NBA comeback.

However, a comeback seems unlikely.

“I’ve talked to Tracy McGrady about this a number of times,” writes Alex Kennedy of Basketball Insiders. “I know that he has had the itch to play several times since retiring, but in the past he has been the first one to say that he’s not sure if he wants to put the necessary work in to make a comeback. Also, I think he would be extremely picky about what situation he would go to. I think he would only consider playing again if it was a good situation and he was going to get the chance to actually contribute. At adidas Nations, he told us that he was enjoying not having a ton of responsibilities, being able to spend a lot of time with his kids and doing things like that. Check out the interview here. Last month, he was playing in China and having a lot of fun. To answer your question, McGrady definitely gets the itch to return every now and then, but I don’t think we’ll see him return to the NBA.”

With how many injuries McGrady went through, the grind of the NBA is probably just too much for him. McGrady played for the Toronto Raptors, Orlando Magic, Houston Rockets, New York Knicks, Detroit Pistons and Atlanta Hawks.

In what will probably wind up being a very underrated career, McGrady averaged 19.6 points, 5.6 rebounds, 4.4 assists and 1.2 steals per game while shooting 43.5% from the field, 33.8% from beyond the arc and 74.6% from the free throw line.
