Earlier this week, Phoenix Mercury and WNBA star Brittney Griner was reportedly involved in a knife attack while in China. She described her attack to ESPNW’s Kate Fagan.
While boarding the team bus in Shenyang, Griner was attacked by a man who followed the players onto the bus. She sustained minor injuries while one of her teammates was also stabbed. Griner was apparently bundled up in multiple layers, and so the knife didn’t penetrate too far. She also described the knife as “dull.”
"Right then, my teammate grabbed me from behind and pulled me further onto the bus. But my second teammate was still in the front, and I watched as he jabbed at her four or five times. I thought she was getting stabbed. And I couldn’t wrap my mind around what was happening. I felt like I was watching a foreign movie, because I couldn’t understand anything anyone was saying. The whole thing felt surreal. We were a few seats away, and everything felt slow-motion. But I couldn’t just sit there and watch this happen. I held my backpack in front of me, for protection in case he started jabbing at me again, and I stood with the goal of distracting the attacker from what he was doing. But my other teammate held my arm."
Griner goes on to say the man was yelling, demanding that the team get to their knees and that he was “going to kill” them before getting off the bus. Finally police showed up and took him to a mental health facility.
Griner reportedly did not need stitches and did not go to the hospital.
It’s a pretty wild story, and worth the complete read over at ESPNW. Thankfully everyone is okay and is safe.
