Former NFL Pro Bowler Deion Sanders told Larry King he thinks homosexuality ‘could be’ a choice and that he doesn’t condone nor condemn it.

We’ve long ago learned that NFL players have plenty to teach us about toughness and very little to teach us about social finesse. And yet, here we are, analyzing the latest thing that former

NFL

star Deion Sanders had to say about the recently released Michael Sam and the issue of equality for homosexuals in our society.

As you might expect, Sanders doesn’t exactly have the most enlightened take on the topic. And by that we mean his sensitivity to the issue is roughly on par with that of Gunnery Sergeant Hartman from Full Metal Jacket (NSFW on the link because it’s Hartman, after all).

Deadspin posted the full video of the Sanders interview and naturally it’s a doozy. Sanders, in a quiet, servile tone spews the latest round of hot ignorance to escape an NFL player as it pertains to homosexuality, noting that it ‘could be’ a choice and that he neither condemns nor condones it. We’ve embedded it below for your viewing.

Why don’t you just tell everyone you prefer a don’t ask, don’t tell stance while you’re at it there, Deion? Maybe say you’d prefer it if gay men didn’t share a bathroom with you. At least then you wouldn’t have to use this wishy washy language and mannerisms.

It’s right after Sanders discusses the ‘burden’ of homosexuality that King finally asks in all seriousness if Sanders really thinks this is a choice and of course Sanders follows up with his uninformed take. ‘Why couldn’t it be?’ he asks as the rest of us slap our foreheads.

The real problem here isn’t what Sanders believes. He’s entitled to think whatever he likes. The real problem is that a lot of people look up to Sanders and are actually going to think he knows what he’s talking about when Deion Sanders has as much expertise in this area as a goat.

Be as ignorant as you want to be on your own time, but understand that there are basic tenants of life and the pursuit of happiness in this country in this century. If you don’t agree with someone else’s legal pursuit of choice, it’s probably better to say less about it than more. Of course, saying less has never been a specialty of Deion’s.
