Los Angeles Lakers Fans Freak Out On Steve Nash
By Ed Carroll
Los Angeles Lakers point guard Steve Nash isn’t playing in the NBA this year — or possibly ever again — due to a nerve issue in his back, but Lakers fans weren’t too happy about an Instagram video of Nash hitting golf balls.
One nice thing about social media is it’s given fans access to athletes and sports unlike ever before — before, when the offseason hit, you said goodbye to hearing about an athlete save for the random feature here or there to justify the beat writer’s employment. But the access is a dual-edged sword when fans assume a player can’t have a personal life or interests outside of the sport.

Steve Nash will miss the 2014-2015 NBA season due to a nerve issue in his back, an issue that’s bothered him for part of his career, and there’s a good possibility Nash will never play in the NBA again, let alone play for the Los Angeles Lakers again. He’s been taking to this forced retirement about as well as anyone could, and Nash is able to engage in some physical activities, and posted pictures of himself hiking and hitting golf balls on Instagram, apparently violating some Los Angeles law stating athletes are only allowed to think about their sport at all times of the day. Most of the comments are ignorant at best, offensive at worst.
Lakers coach Byron Scott had the best advice for Lakers fans, and really all fans who like to freak out over this crap:
“It probably doesn’t look good [publicly], but Jesus Christ, relax.”
Might be the smartest thing Scott has ever said.
