Boston Celtics‘ point guard Marcus Smart was hurt tonight and it appeared to be fairly serious for the NBA rookie.

Marcus Smart was drafted by the Boston Celtics as the heir apparent to point guard Rajon Rondo, but tonight he went down with what appeared like a serious leg injury. Watching the replay it appears that he simply rolled his ankle after stepping on a defenders foot, but he was in much more pain that a simple rolled ankle and stayed down on the floor for a good amount of time.

Obviously the hope is that he simply rolled the ankle and won’t have to miss too much time, but it simply didn’t look like that. Smart has been playing a fairly big role off the bench for Boston, and losing him long-term would be a major blow to the team. It was certainly a freak injury if it was something more serious than a sprain, but more will be known over the next 24 hours after he undergoes tests.

Hopefully things aren’t as serious as they seemed to be when Smart was laying on the ground shouting out in pain. He is an extremely talented player with a very bright future, and he was getting valuable experience early on this season. Boston will have to wait and find out more from the tests, but there is no doubt that they are nervously hoping for nothing serious.
