According to AT&T, the Miami Dolphins rank first in the NFL in data usage among fans at home games. Why are South Floridians so obsessed with their cell phones?

As reported by Andrew Abramson for the Palm Beach Postthe Miami Dolphins ranked No. 1 in the NFL in smart phone usage.

"AT&T tracks data usage at sports events and Sun Life Stadium was No. 1 each week the Dolphins have had a home game.Dolphins games are averaging 1,022 gigabytes of usage — shattering the rest of the NFL. Dallas is next at 773 gigabytes, followed by San Diego (706 GB), San Francisco (582 GB) and New Orleans (574 GB)."

So why are South Floridians using their cell phones so much during Miami Dolphins games? Well, for one, the Dolphins have incorporated Bluetooth spots throughout the stadium and have an app that allows users to track the lines at concessions stands.

It’s also an outdoor stadium, which I imagine has better reception than arena’s that maybe don’t encourage phone usage as much.

Having grown up in South Florida, I can certainly speak to the level of obsessiveness with taking selfies and being on the cell phone all day long. While it borderlines on superficial, I like to think the beaches and great weather just makes for great selfies.

There are also a lot of casual sports fans in South Florida–to an annoying degree. It’s not like Philadelphia or Wisconsin. It’s a place with a lot more to do, and going to a game is often just another thing to do on a Sunday. It’s just the culture, South Floridians love their cell phones.
