Statistics can be used to send just about any sort of message, as flyers at Michigan State’s Spartan Stadium point out most eloquently.
Lies, damn lies and statistics—so goes the old saw about how statistics can be spun in many different ways.
Flyers around Spartan Stadium in East Lansing, Mich., in advance of Saturday’s Big Ten showdown between Michigan State and Ohio State provide a graphic illustration of this:

Let’s look at that declaration again:
"“Nearly eight out of 10 Spartans attend games without being intoxicated,” the flyer declares."

That also means that more than 20 percent of fans at the stadium are bombed.
Actually, though, one of the most amusing parts of the flyer was this one:
"“Nine out of 10 watch out for friends to make sure they stay safe.”"
Again, inverting this phrase means that one out of every 10 Spartans fans either have no friends or they don’t care if those friends stay safe.
That would be the people who point and laugh when people slip and fall on the ice, one could surmise.
But the most epic fail on the flyer would be this:
"“Eight out of 10 arrange for a designated driver.”"
Does this mean that there’s actually 80 percent of the crowd that is hammered to the point of being worried about driving home?
Just imagine how bad those numbers would look if the Spartans weren’t, you know, actually a good team.
