The Anaheim Ducks are having trouble winning on their own home ice.

It’s still early in the season, but the Anaheim Ducks are developing a mildly concerning trend.

The Pacific Division team is still the powerhouse of the West, using their two overtime points over the last two games to continue pulling ahead in the league standings. With 22 points, the Ducks still uncontested not only at the top of their own division, but at the top of the NHL standings altogether- and with a 10-3-2 record, it’s hard to even justify calling the past few games a ‘slump’ for the squad led by Ryan Getzlaf.

The team that set a franchise record for their home game record last season, though, is having trouble there- at home.

The Ducks have lost their past three games at home, falling in overtime to both the New York Islanders and the Arizona Coyotes and netting a devastating 4-1 loss to the San Jose Sharks. In addition, they only won the two games in between those- hosted by the Colorado Avalanche and the Dallas Stars– by a single point each; hard to view as reassuring, as both those franchises are off to a particularly slow start this fall.

It’s hard to pinpoint exactly what’s going wrong for the franchise. Friday night, they outshot the Arizona Coyotes 39-26, and ended the first period with a 2-0 lead. They aren’t losing possession of the puck very often, and there’s no consistent injury across all three home losses to attribute the struggles to.

The team might just be in a slump- but in an increasingly competitive Western Conference, that might not be something the Ducks should be content with.
