Boston Red Sox GM Hints Team Could Pursue Pablo Sandoval
By CM Towle
Boston Red Sox GM Ben Cherington discusses the team’s reportedly “aggressive” interest in San Francisco Giants third baseman Pablo Sandoval.
The Boston Red Sox are reportedly interested in the services of San Francisco Giants star Pablo Sandoval — who is hitting free agency this winter. In an interview reported by Rob Bradford of Full Count, Red Sox GM Ben Cherington talked about the team’s interest in the now free agent third baseman Pablo Sandoval.

Cherington remained vague on how interested the team actually is, saying that they need a left-handed hitter and third base seems like the right place to add it.
"“He’s a good hitter at a position that’s tough to find, and that’s why there will be a lot of teams interested, including the one he’s playing for,” Cherington said."
Sandoval is expected to meet with the Red Sox next week. The meeting between the two sides is expected to take place during the general manager’s meetings next week in Scottsdale, Arizona according to Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe. As Cherington said in the recent interview, the Giants are obviously interested in keeping Sandoval, though GM Brian Sabean indicated they would not break the bank for him. A report this past week mentioned that Sandoval wants at least a six year contract, something that might make both teams pause.
Sandoval is one of the top tier third basemen when his weight is manageable. When he’s heavier, his quickness and overall numbers suffer. He lost 30 pounds in the offseason following 2013, but gained about 20 pounds back during the 2014 season. Sandoval is currently listed at 5’11 and 245 pounds.
Sandoval had a line of .279/.324/.415 with 16 home runs and 73 RBI in 157 games during the 2014 season. His postseason average was .344 and he had an OPS of .935. His average over three World Series appearances is .426.
