Slava Voynov’s agent looks to appeal his suspension by the NHL, claiming it impedes Voynov’s rights

According to NBC’s Pro Hockey Talk, Los Angeles Kings defenseman Slava Voynov’s agent is looking to potentially lift his client’s indefinite suspension.

The suspension was awarded almost immediately following Voynov’s arrest in Southern California on suspicions of domestic abuse. Although no formal charges have been made yet, the Redondo Beach police plan to hold the first hearing for the case on December 5th.

Voynov’s agent, Rolland Hedges, claims that his client should at least be given the option to appeal the suspension, voicing his concern that the indefinite nature of the suspension infringes on his client’s rights. According to the new CBA, signed into effect in 2013, Voynov has the option to appeal the decision- although any kind of appeal would most likely be accompanied by his agreement to cooperate with the league in an investigation, which he has declined to do thus far.

"“Slava believes he is innocent,” Hedges told the Times. “If he has to have his day in court, he will. We all respect the law. But there comes a point where you just can’t sit back.”"

The Redondo Beach Police are scheduled to meet with the assistant D.A. on Monday to further discuss the case; when the police department first handed over the case, the district attorney requested further information for the case. As of November 8th, no formal charges have been filed; yet, Voynov has not played a game since being arrested on October 20th and suspended immediately after.
