During the Detroit Red Wings’ 4-3 overtime loss to the New York Rangers on Wednesday, backup netminder Jonas Gustavsson suffered a separated shoulder on the game-winning goal for New York.
What the team’s head coach Mike Babcock originally assumed would be a couple of weeks, though, will be a couple of months- recovery time, that is.
As a result, the Red Wings have recalled 22 year old goaltender Petr Mrazek from the team’s AHL affiliate, the Grand Rapid Griffins. Mrazek’s face isn’t an unfamiliar one for Red Wings fans, but he’s going to have to prepare for a long NHL stay- and, should starting netminder Jimmy Howard deal with the same level of health issues he has in past seasons, with starting for the team in a more serious capacity.
The Detroit Roster has been plagued by injuries since the start of the season, although the franchise has at least had the luxury of rotating players on injured reserve. They haven’t struggled nearly as much as the Columbus Blue Jackets, who at one point had nine starting roster players on the team’s injury roster.
