The third-ranked Tigers rallied from a 35-17 halftime deficit, but coughed up the ball twice inside Texas A&M territory in the last three minutes, allowing the Aggies to leave Jordan Hare Stadium with a 41-38 win that all but killed Auburn’s title hopes.
Auburn moved the ball to the Texas A&M one-yard line in the closing minutes, but Nick Marshall fumbled the ball on a second and goal to give the Aggies a stay of execution. The Tigers’ defense held on downs and gave the offense one last chance, but a disconnect on the snap at the Texas A&M 28 fell into the hands of Aggies defensive tackle Alonzo Williams, officially beginning the cue for the theme of Saw to signal the Tigers’ doom.
The Tigers’ defense played as if haunted by Jigsaw in the first half, as Aggies quarterback Kyle Allen threw four touchdown passes to give Texas A&M a cushion it expanded at the end of the half when Deshazor Everett took a blocked field goal attempt 65 yards to the end zone to put Auburn into an 18-point hole.
Marshall ran for two touchdowns and passed for a third as the Tigers mounted a rally similar to the magic they put together last season en route to the BCS title game, yet his sudden case of stone hands has turned Auburn into spectators when a national champion is crowned.
