Colorado Avalanche forward Nathan MacKinnon given boarding major for hit on Luke Schenn

Patrick Roy was not very pleased with the call, but the ruling stands.

During the Avalanche’s game against the Philadelphia Flyers on Saturday night, 19 year old Nathan MacKinnon gave defenseman Luke Schenn a… little bit of an extra push.

It wasn’t your traditional boarding call; MacKinnon’s only contact with Schenn was his hands, as he pushed the blue liner in the back about six feet away from the boards. It knocked Schenn off balance, though, and sent him careening awkwardly into the boards. He had to turn himself to the side and absorb the impact with his shoulder to avoid connecting with the boards head first, which would have likely been a much more serious injury.

As it is, Schenn remained on the ice for a couple of moments before slowly getting to his feet and skating off in obvious discomfort. It looked like he was favoring his shoulder, suggesting that the team leader could be out for a while with some kind of shoulder injury. No word yet on the severity of the issue.

A scrum broke out near where Schenn fell; a number of Flyers were unhappy with the play, and alternately went after MacKinnon and Avs captain Gabriel Landeskog. Once the referees broke up the scuffle, MacKinnon was taken to the box, where he was originally set to serve a two-minute penalty. He was ultimately given the five minute major, though, and went into the locker room.

While the move was undoubtedly reckless on MacKinnon’s part and an injury should never be laughed at, let’s all have a moment of silence for the impressive shades of purple Patrick Roy turned after the ruling was made.
